Who is eligible
The AMEP is available to adult migrants (18 years old or over)
who have been assessed as not having functional English language
skills. The following people are eligible:
newly arrived migrants or humanitarian entrants from
overseas
migrants who arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
temporary residents who hold a gazetted visa class
people who have been granted permanent residence in Australia
since July 1991
Young migrants may be eligible for AMEP classes if they:
have recently arrived and are between the age of 16 and 18
years and are unable to access school ESL programs (enrolment has
to occur before turning 18)
have turned 18 years between the date of application and
arrival and are unable to access school ESL programs
If one of these categories applies to you, you are entitled to
English language classes through Northern AMEP.
How to Enrol
Enrolling for a program with Northern AMEP is easy.
Visit one of our sites between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday
(bring your passport and visa) or telephone one of our sites to
make an appointment for assessment.
If you are eligible we will assess your English speaking skills
and inform you about the next available course.
Choose a class that suits your needs - daily, weekly or
distance learning, full time, part time or evening.
Northern AMEP Classes
With Northern AMEP, you can choose the way you study:
weekly classes - these are available full time or part
time, morning, afternoon or evenings, Monday to Friday, at a place
near your home. Some centres also offer weekend classes.
distance learning - you can study at home, with books
and other materials we send you and you will have regular contact
with your teacher over the phone or by email.
home tutor - you can study at home with a volunteer
tutor.
