Learning English

Who is eligible

The AMEP is available to adult migrants (18 years old or over) who have been assessed as not having functional English language skills. The following people are eligible:

  • newly arrived migrants or humanitarian entrants from overseas
  • migrants who arrived in Australia after 1 July 1991
  • temporary residents who hold a gazetted visa class
  • people who have been granted permanent residence in Australia since July 1991

Young migrants may be eligible for AMEP classes if they:

  • have recently arrived and are between the age of 16 and 18 years and are unable to access school ESL programs (enrolment has to occur before turning 18)
  • have turned 18 years between the date of application and arrival and are unable to access school ESL programs

If one of these categories applies to you, you are entitled to English language classes through Northern AMEP.
