Northern AMEP volunteer tutors help eligible adult migrants and
refugees who cannot attend regular English classes. Tutoring
usually takes place in the informal atmosphere of the student's own
home. However, volunteer can also assist in converstion practice in
adult migrants English classes.
To be a volunteer tutor, you need to be able to speak and write
English well, relate to people from different cultural backgrounds
and spare a few hours a week. You don't need to speak another
language or be a teacher.
Northern AMEP will provide you with:
- an informal training course that includes practical ideas to
help with your tutoring
- ongoing advice and support from proffesional staff
- regular newsletters, ongonig training and informal
get-togethers
- access to a variety of resources, including books and
tapes.
Volunteering to become a tutor gives you the opportunity to
develop new skills, meet people form a wide range of backgrounds,
learn about other languages and cultures and help migrants learn
English and become part of the Australian community.
