Starting the AMEP

Before you start AMEP classes you need to call Northern AMEP on 1300 062 314 to make an appointment for assessment. Or go to one of our AMEP centres between 9am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday (bring your passport and visa).

At this meeting, we will:

  • tell you if you are eligible for AMEP classes and when the next course starts
  • assess your level of English
  • agree on the number of hours you will study each week and the type of class you will attend
  • discuss your childcare needs
  • develop a plan for your study and career goals.

Step-by-step guide to Northern AMEP studies

1. Contact Northern AMEP

If you would like to study English, contact us:

  • call 130 062 314
  • vist any of our sites
  • email us at namep@nmit.vic.edu.au

We need to have your visa number and your name so that we can tell you if you are eligible to enrol in AMEP classes. Then we will make a time for you to meet with us.

2. Meet with us

We will give you a short English test so that we can find out which class will suit you.

Then we will talk with you about your goals and the type of work you would like to do in the future. This will help us to develop an Individual Learning Plan for you.

You can bring a friend or interpreter to this meeting if you would like to.

3. Choose your class

You can choose to study full time, part time, day or evening, in a class that is near your home.

If you cannot attend class, we can organise for you to study with a Home Tutor at your house, through Distance Learning or with self-paced e-learning materials on a computer.

4. During your course

During your course, you will take part in lots of activities and go out of the classroom to places of interest around Melbourne. These activities will help you to settle successfully in Australia.

Your AMEP Counsellor will help you during your studies with Northern AMEP. If you want to know more about jobs or further study during your English classes, our AMEP staff can help you. If you have other problems, your AMEP Counsellor can tell you where to get help.

We will also ask you to tell us how we can improve the course.

5. When you finish

At the end of your course, your AMEP Counsellor will meet with you to review your goals and help you to plan for work or more study.
