Volunteering as a tutor gives you the opportunity to develop new
skills, meet people from a wide range of backgrounds, learn about
other languages and cultures, and help migrants learn English and
become part of the Australian community.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor with
Northern AMEP, there are several ways that you can become
involved.
- Under the Home Tutor Scheme, our volunteer tutors help adult
migrants and refugees who are unable to attend regular English
classes to learn English. Tutoring usually takes place in the
informal atmosphere of the student's own home.
- English classes are run at 9 sites across northern Melbourne,
and volunteers assist our teachers in the AMEP classrooms.
To be a volunteer tutor, you need to be able to speak and write
English well, relate to people from different cultural backgrounds
and spare a few hours a week. You don't need to speak another
language or be a teacher.
Northern AMEP will provide you with:
- an accredited training course that includes practical ideas to
help with your tutoring
- ongoing advice and support from professional staff
- regular newsletters, ongoing training and informal
get-togethers
- access to a variety of resources, including books and
tapes.
